Śrī Kṛṣṇa (as the instructing divine speaker, identified with Lord Viṣṇu in Garuḍa Purāṇa dialogue)
Afterlife Stage: Pretayoni
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: Prerequisite relationship stated: vṛṣotsarga must precede piṇḍa-dāna (within the post-death śrāddha sequence).
Concept: Anuṣṭhāna-krama (correct ritual order) determines karmic efficacy; without vṛṣotsarga, piṇḍa-dāna becomes niṣphala.
Vedantic Theme: Karma requires śraddhā and vidhi (proper injunction) to bear fruit; misapplied action fails to generate intended saṃskāra-phala.
Application: Before piṇḍa-dāna, ensure vṛṣotsarga is duly performed where prescribed; verify local śākhā/ācāra requirements to avoid niṣphalatā.

Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.13.8 (11th-day vṛṣotsarga and preta-stability); Garuda Purana śrāddha-vidhi passages emphasizing sequence and prerequisites
This verse states that vṛṣotsarga is a prerequisite: without it, piṇḍa offerings do not produce the intended merit for the performer and do not effectively benefit the preta.
By referencing the 'preta' state, the verse implies an intermediate post-death condition where specific rites are meant to assist; if key duties are omitted, the ritual support is considered ineffective for that departed condition.
If performing ancestral or post-death rites, follow the prescribed sequence and intent (dharma and śraddhā), and consult competent tradition-bearers so the rites are done completely rather than selectively.
