Adhyāya 270 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s inquiry on saṃnyāsa; Bhīṣma on calculable time, tamas, and karma

अधनो ब्राह्मण: कश्रित्‌ कामाद्‌ू धर्ममवैक्षत । यज्ञार्थ सततोर्डर्थार्थी तपो5तप्यपत दारुणम्‌

Bhīṣma uvāca — adhano brāhmaṇaḥ kaścit kāmād dharmam avekṣata | yajñārthaṃ satato ’rthārthī tapo ’tapyata dāruṇam ||

ਭੀਸ਼ਮ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਇੱਕ ਵੇਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਗਰੀਬ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਦੇ ਵਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਕਰ ਬੈਠਾ। ਯੱਗ ਲਈ ਧਨ ਦੀ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਇੱਛਾ ਰੱਖਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਕਠੋਰ ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ।
