Determining Rites for Difficult/Inauspicious Deaths; Annual and Daily Śrāddha Rules
yadā māso na vijñāto vijñātaṃ dinameva ca / tadā mārgaśire māsi māghe vā taddinaṃ bhavet
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vainateya)
Ritual Type: Ekoddishta
Beneficiary: Pitr
Timing: When death-month is unknown but tithi/day is known; observe that tithi in Mārgaśīrṣa or Māgha

Vedantic Theme: Dharma accommodates human limitation through sanctioned conventions, maintaining saṃskāra integrity.
Application: When only the tithi/day is known, observe on that tithi in Mārgaśīrṣa; alternatively in Māgha, per tradition.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Type: griha/ritual-space
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.45.14, 2.45.16 (progressive rules for unknown death timing)
This verse addresses a practical dharmic problem: if the month cannot be confirmed but the day (tithi/date) is known, one should still perform the rite by assigning it to an accepted month (Mārgaśīrṣa or Māgha), ensuring the śrāddha is not omitted.
In the Preta Kanda, proper timing of rites supports the departed’s onward journey and the family’s dharmic duty; this verse gives a fallback rule so the prescribed observances can continue even when calendar details are missing.
If family records are incomplete and only the day is known, consult a qualified priest/panchāṅga and follow this Garuda Purana fallback—choose Mārgaśīrṣa or Māgha—so the annual remembrance and charity are performed consistently.
