Sūta
Listener: Śaunaka and the Naimiṣāraṇya sages (standard frame)
Scene: A parvan day at a tīrtha: devotees seated in a semi-circle listening to a paurāṇika recite; in the background a Śiva shrine glows, suggesting the promised 'Śiva-mandira' destination.
Bhakti expressed through hearing and reciting sacred praise leads toward Śiva’s grace and final refuge.
The chapter’s tīrtha—Śarmiṣṭhātīrtha—whose māhātmya is to be heard/recited.
On parvan days, recite the māhātmya or listen to it with devotion (bhaktyā śravaṇa/pāṭha).
