Inside Sukta 34

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A vivid epiphany of the Maruts as streaming, vehement powers—fearsome like wild beings and blazing like kindled fires—who blow away obstruction and reveal the hidden rays.

  2. Development

Their splendor and motion are amplified through chariot and horse imagery; their coming draws near fortune (Bhaga) and they pour a vast ‘iṣ’ (impulse/nourishment) to the offerer.

  3. Climax

The hymn turns from description to urgent supplication: the Maruts’ distinctive ‘ūti’ (aid) is praised as the power that carries the broken beyond distress and frees the worthy from constricting blame.

  4. Where it settles

It ends with a direct request that their help face toward the poet and that ‘sumati’—right mind and auspicious guidance—arrive and gather the rays near.

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are Rudra’s youthful, many-formed companions—resplendent, roaring, chariot-riding storm-gods with shining ornaments, swift horses, and flashing weapons; they blaze like fires and shake heaven and earth with their coming.
  • Cosmic functionThey marshal the energies of storm and wind, break open obstructions, quicken rain and fertility, and help restore cosmic order by clearing the path for light and life (often pictured as releasing the hidden cows/rays).
  • Inner significanceThey signify the surge of inspired force—courage, prāṇa-like dynamism, and the collective power that breaks inertia and frees the mind’s light from inner concealment, granting ‘sumati’ (right thought).

The seer

  • Gṛtsamada (Gṛtsamada Bhārgava)Bhārgava (of the Bhr̥gu lineage) · A principal seer of Maṇḍala 2, celebrated for powerful Marut and Agni hymns and for his distinctive imagery of the Maruts as blazing, obstacle-clearing forces who aid the sacrificer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maruts are Rudra’s storm-companions—bright, roaring, swift chariot-riders. The hymn portrays them as fire-like powers who break obstacles and bring strength, rain-like nourishment, and protection.

In Vedic imagery, “cows” often symbolize rays of light and life-giving abundance. Saying the Maruts uncover them means they drive away concealment and obstruction so light, clarity, and prosperity can emerge.

The hymn asks the Maruts to turn their help toward the worshipper: to carry the afflicted beyond distress, remove constricting blame, and grant ‘sumati’—a steady, auspicious, right-minded guidance.
