Udyoga Parva Adhyaya 133 — A Mother’s Counsel to Saṃjaya
mātaṅgo matta iva ca parīyāt sumahāmanāḥ | brāhmaṇebhyo namennityaṃ dharmāyaiva ca sañjaya sañjaya ||
A kṣatriya’s public strength should be fearless and unhesitating, but it must be governed by reverence—especially toward brāhmaṇas and toward Dharma—so that power remains aligned with righteousness rather than pride.
In a didactic exchange within Udyoga Parva, the speaker identified as “the son” addresses Sañjaya, using the image of a rutting elephant to describe bold kṣatriya conduct, while simultaneously prescribing continual homage to brāhmaṇas and Dharma as the ethical boundary for such boldness.
