पात्रलक्षण-परिक्षा (Pātra-Lakṣaṇa Parīkṣā) — Criteria for a Worthy Recipient

यद्‌ ब्राह्मणमुखात्‌ प्राप्तं प्रतिगृह्लन्ति वै वच: । भूतात्मानो महात्मानस्ते न यान्ति पराभवम्‌

yad brāhmaṇamukhāt prāptaṁ pratigṛhlanti vai vacaḥ | bhūtātmāno mahātmānas te na yānti parābhavam ||

ଭୀଷ୍ମ କହିଲେ—ଯେ ମହାତ୍ମାମାନେ ସମସ୍ତ ଭୂତପ୍ରାଣୀଙ୍କ ପ୍ରତି ଏକାତ୍ମଭାବ ଧାରଣ କରନ୍ତି, ସେମାନେ ବ୍ରାହ୍ମଣମୁଖରୁ ପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ବଚନକୁ ପ୍ରମାଣ ମାନି ଗ୍ରହଣ କରନ୍ତି। ଏପରି ପୁରୁଷ ପରାଭବ କିମ୍ବା ବିନାଶକୁ ପାଆନ୍ତି ନାହିଁ; କାରଣ ସେମାନେ ଆବେଗ କିମ୍ବା ଅହଂକାର ନୁହେଁ, ଧର୍ମସମ୍ମତ ମାର୍ଗଦର୍ଶନକୁ ବାଛନ୍ତି।

One should respectfully accept dharma-informed guidance from the truly learned and principled (symbolized by the brāhmaṇa’s speech). Such receptivity, joined with compassion and nobility of character, protects a person from moral and practical downfall.
