Chapter 344: Ornaments of Word-and-Meaning (शब्दार्थालङ्काराः)
भवेन्नैमित्तिकी पारिभाषिकी द्विविधैव सा सङ्केतः परिभाषेति ततः स्यात् पारिभाषिकी
bhavennaimittikī pāribhāṣikī dvividhaiva sā saṅketaḥ paribhāṣeti tataḥ syāt pāribhāṣikī

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Vyakarana","secondary_vidya":"Alamkara","practical_application":"Separate mere convention (saṅketa) from technical definition (paribhāṣā), and recognize whether a term is context-bound (naimittikī) or strictly technical (pāribhāṣikī) when reading śāstra.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Paribhāṣā: Naimittikī vs Pāribhāṣikī; Saṅketa vs Paribhāṣā","lookup_keywords":["paribhasa","naimittiki","paribhasiki","sanketa","technical-definition"],"quick_summary":"Technical definitions are of two kinds: contextual (naimittikī) and technical (pāribhāṣikī). Saṅketa is convention, while paribhāṣā is a formal technical definition used to govern terminology."}
Concept: Śāstric clarity depends on distinguishing agreed conventions from governing technical definitions, and on knowing whether a definition is context-triggered or purely terminological.
Application: When building a glossary or teaching kāvya-śāstra, label entries as saṅketa (usage-convention) or paribhāṣā (definitional rule), and note whether the definition applies only in a given context (naimittikī) or as a standing technical term (pāribhāṣikī).

Related Themes: Agni Purana 344 (Nighaṇṭu/Paribhāṣā portion); Agni Purana Sāhitya-khaṇḍa: lists of technical terms and their lakṣaṇa (adjacent verses)
It teaches a śāstric classification used in Sanskrit poetics/grammar: distinguishing contextual usage (naimittikī) from formal technical definition (pāribhāṣikī), and differentiating saṅketa (convention) from paribhāṣā (definition).
By including precise meta-rules of interpretation—how terms are conventionally fixed (saṅketa) versus formally defined (paribhāṣā)—the Agni Purana preserves not only religious material but also the technical toolkit of Sanskrit śāstras like vyākaraṇa and kāvya-śāstra.
Its significance is indirect: correct understanding of śāstric terminology prevents misinterpretation of sacred and technical teachings, supporting accurate practice and right knowledge (samyag-jñāna), which is traditionally regarded as purifying and merit-bearing.
