Sesiapa yang makan tanpa mandi, seolah-olah memakan najis; sesiapa yang tidak ber-japa, seolah-olah menelan nanah dan darah; sesiapa yang makan tanpa terlebih dahulu mempersembahkan kepada Agni/para dewa, seolah-olah memakan ulat; dan sesiapa yang makan tanpa bersedekah (dāna), seolah-olah memakan racun.

Food becomes sanctifying only when joined to purity, remembrance (japa), offering, and generosity—otherwise it spiritually degrades the eater.
