Duties of Qualified Devotees and Marks of Yogins
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: liberating
It teaches that ātma-jñāna (realization of Shiva as the inner Self) dawns in the purified and discerning, but even advanced seekers still face worldly-strain in upholding dharma—relieved and sanctified through Shiva’s grace (anugraha).
Lingārcana and Saguna worship purify the mind and sharpen viveka, making one fit for Shiva’s prasāda through which inner realization arises; the verse also reminds devotees that disciplined religious life (āśrama-dharma) must be protected alongside worship.
Sustained śauca and discipline—daily Shiva-pūjā with mantra-japa (especially the Panchakshara, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—supports purification and viveka, helping one bear and transform the hardships of maintaining āśrama-dharma.
