वायुरुवाच । महीधरवरः श्रीमान्मंदरश्चित्रकंदरः । दयितो देवदेवस्य निवासस्तपसो ऽभवत्
vāyuruvāca | mahīdharavaraḥ śrīmānmaṃdaraścitrakaṃdaraḥ | dayito devadevasya nivāsastapaso 'bhavat
Vāyu berkata: “Gunung Mandara yang mulia, terunggul antara segala gunung, dihiasi gua-gua yang menakjubkan, menjadi kediaman yang dikasihi bagi tapa (tapas) Dewa segala dewa, yakni Śiva.”

Sthala Purana: Mandara mountain is identified as Śiva’s beloved tapas-nivāsa, implying a kṣetra sanctified by the Lord’s residence and austerity rather than a Jyotirliṅga manifestation narrative.
Significance: A ‘tapas-sthāna’ where remembrance of Śiva’s austerity supports sādhana: steadiness (dhṛti), restraint, and aspiration for darśana.
It sanctifies Mandara as a divinely charged space where Śiva’s tapas is established, teaching that places connected to the Lord’s austerity become powerful supports for purification and liberation (mokṣa).
By describing Śiva’s chosen abode, the verse supports Saguna devotion: devotees approach Śiva through sacred locations and consecrated seats of worship, where His presence is felt and worship (including Liṅga-pūjā) becomes especially fruitful.
It implies undertaking tapas—steady japa of Śiva-mantras (especially the Pañcākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), along with disciplined meditation and simple living, ideally in a sanctified place associated with Śiva.
