Suta Goswami (narrating the Purāṇic discourse to the sages, conveying the warning of karmic retribution)

Tattva Level: pasha

Shiva Form: Kālāntaka

Sthala Purana: Foreshadows the yajña’s collapse: karmic retribution (daṇḍa) arises as the moral consequence of īśvara-nindā; in the Dakṣa cycle this culminates in the violent disruption of the sacrifice.

Significance: Instills fear of aparādha and confidence in dharma’s moral order; encourages repentance and Śiva-śaraṇāgati to avert harsh outcomes.

FAQs

It affirms the Shaiva moral law that pāpa (sin) creates pāśa (bondage) and inevitably yields a corresponding daṇḍa (consequence). This pushes the seeker toward dharma, repentance, and taking refuge in Pati (Śiva) for purification and release.

The verse underscores that consequences arise from actions, while refuge in Saguna Śiva—worshipped as the Liṅga—supports inner transformation: confession, restraint, and devotion that burn impurities, loosening pāśa and restoring alignment with Śiva’s order.

A practical takeaway is prāyaścitta with Śiva-bhakti: daily japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), worship of the Liṅga with water and bilva leaves, and wearing vibhūti (tripuṇḍra) as a reminder to abandon harmful deeds.
