Pārvatī’s Vow of Truth and the Dialogue on Her Tapas
Suta Goswami (narrating the Purāṇic account; the verse reflects worldly criticism directed toward Lord Shiva in the narrative context)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Nīlakaṇṭha
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
Offering: pushpa
Cosmic Event: samudra-manthana (implied by nīlakaṇṭha/viṣa motif)
The verse highlights a worldly, external way of judging Shiva—by caste, conventional learning, companions, and visible marks—while Shaiva teaching points to Shiva as Pati, beyond social categories and appearances, approachable through devotion rather than status.
Linga worship trains the devotee to look past outer attributes and fix the mind on Shiva’s presence as the all-pervading Lord; even when Saguna Shiva bears unusual signs (like the poison-marked throat), the devotee recognizes them as divine līlā and compassion, not defects.
Practice seeing beyond externals by steady japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) before the Shiva-linga, cultivating equanimity toward social labels and focusing on Shiva as the liberating Lord.
