Description of the Conduct and Daily Discipline of Saṃnyāsa
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Significance: Abhimantraṇa with praṇava and guarding the bodily apertures symbolizes restraining outgoing senses (indriya-nigraha), a key step in overcoming māyā-pāśa and preparing for Śiva’s presence in worship.
Mantra: Oṃ (praṇava)
Type: gayatri
It teaches mantra-śuddhi and prāṇic restraint: by sealing the bodily ‘doors’ and sanctifying water with Oṃ, the practitioner turns outward energy inward, preparing the mind for Shaiva worship and inner purity under Pati (Shiva).
Sanctified water is a primary upacāra for Linga-abhiṣeka; invoking Oṃ aligns the offering with Shiva as both Saguna (worshiped through the Linga) and the transcendent Pati whose presence is invoked through mantra.
A brief internalization practice: hold water, close/guard the sense-openings (a form of pratyāhāra), and mantra-consecrate it with Oṃ before using it for ācamana or Shiva’s abhiṣeka.
