Tara’s Lament over Vāli
'O darling, attractively dressed, you are leaving me and Angada and going too far. What unpleasant deeds we have done (to deserve this).
The verse reflects the ethical psychology of grief: the bereaved searches for causes and faults, reminding readers that sorrow often turns inward and demands compassion rather than judgment.
Tārā, beside the dying Vāli, asks whether she or Aṅgada has offended him, since he is ‘departing’ on the far journey of death.
Tārā’s humility and emotional honesty—she questions herself rather than only blaming others.
