FAQs

The line indicates a boundary of trust and eligibility: the listener is characterized as an outsider (“bahiścaraḥ”), while Lakṣmaṇa is portrayed as Rāma’s closest confidant—his “prāṇa” (life-breath).

It conveys intense loyalty and inseparable companionship, presenting Lakṣmaṇa as the ideal of devoted service and fraternal commitment—an ethical model of steadfast support in dharma.

Although placed in the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa, the verse itself is narrative and ethical in tone, emphasizing discernment in speech (guarding secrets) and the primacy of trusted, dharmic relationships.
