The Account of Hanumān
यथा पपौ हि पानीयं तथा वह्निमपि द्विजा । कंटकानन्नवद्भुक्त्वा यथापूर्वमतिष्ठत ॥ ५९ ॥
yathā papau hi pānīyaṃ tathā vahnimapi dvijā | kaṃṭakānannavadbhuktvā yathāpūrvamatiṣṭhata || 59 ||
Sebagaimana dia meminum air, demikian pula—wahai yang dua kali lahir—dia bahkan memakan api; dan setelah memakan duri seolah-olah makanan, dia tetap seperti sediakala.
Narada (narrating/teaching to the dvijas in the technical-discourse context of Book 1.3)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It illustrates the fruit of intense tapas and yogic mastery: when the mind and prāṇa are fully disciplined, even normally harmful elements (fire, thorns) do not disturb one’s steadiness.
Indirectly, it shows the ideal of unwavering steadiness; in bhakti too, the devotee remains undisturbed by hardship, maintaining single-pointed remembrance and faith despite adverse conditions.
The verse functions as a technical exemplar within the Third Pada’s instructional tone: it points to disciplined practice and control (a supportive discipline for śāstra-study), rather than a specific ritual rule—emphasizing steadiness required for sustained learning and observance.
