Educational Q&A

The verse presents portents of ethical and social breakdown: when discernment (pāścitta) is lost, even the most fundamental bonds—marriage and family—can be violated, and this moral disorder is mirrored by ‘unnatural’ cosmic signs such as an untimely eclipse.

Mārkaṇḍeya is describing ominous future conditions to the king: women, acting without wisdom, will arrange the killing of their husbands with the involvement of their sons, and the heavens will show abnormal signs—Rāhu eclipsing the Sun at an improper time.
