Adhyāya 188: Mārkaṇḍeya’s Account of Yuga-Decline and the Restoration Motif
Kali-yuga to Kalki
nābhiśaṅkyaṁ idaṁ cāpi vacanaṁ me tvayā vibho | evaṁ kariṣye iti taṁ sa matsyaṁ pratyabhāṣata ||
“Wahai Yang Maha Perkasa, janganlah engkau meragui kata-kataku walau sedikit pun,” kata (Mārkaṇḍeya).
A spoken assurance should be treated as trustworthy, and dharma is upheld when one’s promise is accepted without suspicion and then fulfilled through action.
In dialogue, Mārkaṇḍeya conveys the assurance ‘do not doubt my words,’ and the king responds to the fish, agreeing to act accordingly: ‘Very well, I will do so.’
