The Slaying of Bharadvāja’s Son and the Sage’s Lament
पुत्रशोकमनुप्राप्त एष रैभ्यस्य कर्मणा । त्यक्ष्यामि त्वामृते पुत्र प्राणानिष्टतमान् भुवि,बेटा! आज रैभ्यके इस कठोर कर्मसे मुझे पुत्रशोक प्राप्त हुआ है। तुम्हारे बिना मैं इस पृथ्वीपर अपने परम प्रिय प्राणोंका भी परित्याग कर दूँगा
putraśokam anuprāpta eṣa raibhyasya karmaṇā | tyakṣyāmi tvām ṛte putra prāṇān iṣṭatamān bhuvi ||
Bharadvāja berkata: “Oleh perbuatan Raibhya, dukacita kehilangan anak telah menimpa diriku. Wahai anak, tanpa engkau aku akan meninggalkan bahkan nafas kehidupanku—yang paling kucintai di dunia ini.”
भरद्वाज उवाच
The verse foregrounds how another’s harmful action can precipitate profound suffering, and it portrays the depth of parental attachment—suggesting an ethical warning about deeds (karma) that cause irreversible grief.
Bharadvāja laments that, due to Raibhya’s act, he has been struck by grief over his son; he declares that life itself feels unbearable without the son.
