Viewing the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra

Educational Q&A

The verse conveys the ethical and existential magnitude of mass violence: when entire clans of eminent warriors perish, it feels as if the very constituents of the world (the five elements) have collapsed. It underscores the moral trauma and the sense that adharma-driven slaughter destabilizes the perceived order of life.

In the Strī Parva’s aftermath of the Kurukṣetra war, Vaiśampāyana narrates the overwhelming devastation. Addressing Kṛṣṇa as Madhusūdana, he describes how the annihilation of the Pāñcālas and Kurus makes him feel as though the five great elements themselves have been destroyed.
