Yoga-kṛtya (योककृत्य) — Vyāsa on Sense-Restraint, Obstacles, and Brahman-Realization
त्रेतायां तु समस्ता ये प्रादुरासन् महाबला: । संयन्तार: स्थावराणां जड़मानां च सर्वश:,त्रेतायुगमें जो महाबली नरेश प्रकट हुए थे, वे सब-के-सब समस्त चराचर प्राणियोंके नियन्ता थे
tretāyāṃ tu samastā ye prādurāsan mahābalāḥ | saṃyantāraḥ sthāvarāṇāṃ jaḍamānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ||
Vyāsa berkata: Pada Zaman Tretā, semua raja yang perkasa yang muncul itu, dalam segala hal, menjadi pengekang dan pemerintah bagi seluruh makhluk—yang tidak bergerak sekalipun dan yang tumpul akalnya—menegakkan tertib di seluruh alam kehidupan.
व्यास उवाच
True strength in rulership is shown as saṃyama—disciplined restraint and regulation—so that even those unable to guide themselves (the 'jaḍa') and the vulnerable realms of life (the 'sthāvara') remain protected and ordered under dharma.
Vyāsa describes the character of rulers in the Tretā-yuga: the mighty kings who arose then functioned as universal governors, exercising control and protection over all categories of beings, presenting an idealized contrast to later ages.
