Lord Agni (in dialogue with the sage Vasiṣṭha, as per the usual Agni Purana narrative frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Mantra","secondary_vidya":"Tantra","practical_application":"Text-critical mantra deployment and homa counting: use saṃhitā-aṇu (mantra-units) in the deity’s presence; perform 100/1000/half-count oblations with the full rite, aligning recitation units to offering counts.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Commentary","entry_title":"Saṃhitā-aṇu Mantra-units and Homa Counts (100/1000/half) with Pūrnāhuti","lookup_keywords":["samhita-anu","homa-sankhya","purnahuti","patha-variant","tarpana"],"quick_summary":"After pūjā and tarpana, offer oblations using defined mantra-units; complete either 100, 1000, or half the count, and conclude with the full/complete offering (pūrṇāhuti) as prescribed."}
Concept: Ritual efficacy depends on saṃkhyā (count), krama (order), and pūrṇatā (completion) rather than mere performance; textual fidelity (pāṭha) matters.
Application: When conducting homa, fix a consistent mantra-unit per oblation, choose a sanctioned count (100/1000/half), and ensure a concluding pūrṇāhuti; document pāṭha-variants if following a specific manuscript tradition.
Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Homa and mantra-japa procedures)
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A ritualist beside a fire-pit counting oblations with a mālā or counting sticks, reciting mantra-units precisely, concluding with a larger final offering (pūrṇāhuti); marginal notes indicate variant readings.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural; homa scene with prominent flames, sādhaka holding ladle and mālā, rhythmic counting implied, a larger final offering vessel for pūrṇāhuti, manuscript-like side panels showing variant syllables","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore; gold-laden fire and utensils, sādhaka with mālā, stacked offering bowls, emphasized grand pūrṇāhuti moment with radiant gold burst, ornate borders","mysore_prompt":"Mysore; instructional composition: numbered sequence of 100/1000/half counts, sādhaka counting with beads, final pūrṇāhuti depicted larger, clean lines and soft shading","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature; meticulous ritual interior, assistant recording counts on a tablet, sādhaka offering into small kuṇḍa, final pūrṇāhuti as a larger ladleful, marginalia-like text variants"}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Shankarabharanam","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: This verse contains extensive critical apparatus (iti ṅa/ja/cha etc.) and variant readings; only the main syntactic line analyzed: sampūjya tarpayitvā tu sannidhau saṃhitāṇubhiḥ ... śataṃ sahasram ardhaṃ vā pūrṇayā saha homayet. saṃhitāṇubhiḥ = saṃhitā + aṇubhiḥ.
Related Themes: Agni Purana 96.108 (tattva-mūrti offerings with ghṛta); Agni Purana 96.105–96.107 (nyāsa/dhyāna preparation preceding homa)
It prescribes a practical homa sequence: first pūjā and tarpaṇa, then oblations in the deity’s presence using defined mantra-units, with specified counts (100, 1000, or half).
It reflects the text’s manual-like ritual precision—detailing procedural order, mantra segmentation, and quantitative rules for offerings—showing the Purana functions as a compendium of applied liturgy (pujā-vidhi) alongside its other disciplines.
Correct sequencing (pūjā → tarpaṇa → homa) and disciplined counts of oblations are presented as safeguards of ritual completeness, supporting purification, merit (puṇya), and focused devotional efficacy.
