FAQs

It gives dharma-shastra style technical nomenclature for pratiloma unions and the resulting jāti names (Pukkasa, Māgadha, Ayogava), used in traditional legal-social classification.

Alongside rituals, theology, and arts, the Agni Purana also preserves concise smṛti-like social jurisprudence—cataloging inter-varna unions and their traditional labels as part of its wide-ranging compendium.

By classifying pratiloma progeny, the text reflects a normative dharma framework where social order and conduct are tied to karma and duty; the verse functions as a descriptive rule within that moral-legal worldview rather than a ritual prescription.
