शुंभोनाम महादैत्यः पुराऽसीत्पृथिवीतले । तेन सर्वं जगद्व्याप्तं जित्वा देवान्रणाजिरे
śuṃbhonāma mahādaityaḥ purā'sītpṛthivītale | tena sarvaṃ jagadvyāptaṃ jitvā devānraṇājire
पूर्वी पृथ्वीवर ‘शुंभ’ नावाचा एक महादैत्य होता. रणांगणात देवांना जिंकून त्याने सर्व जगतावर अधिकार मिळवला व सर्वत्र व्यापून राहिला.
