शर्मणष्ठीवनं यस्मात्तया स्वपितुराहितम् । शर्मिष्ठेति सुविख्याता ततः सा ह्यभवद्भुवि

śarmaṇaṣṭhīvanaṃ yasmāttayā svapiturāhitam | śarmiṣṭheti suvikhyātā tataḥ sā hyabhavadbhuvi

तिने आपल्या पित्याच्या ‘शर्म’ म्हणजे सुखावर थुंकी (ठीवन) ठेवली; म्हणून ती पृथ्वीवर ‘शर्मिष्ठा’ या नावाने सुप्रसिद्ध झाली।
