rājovāca | saṃtyanye vividhā viprā vedavedāṃgapāragāḥ | madhyadeśodbhavāḥ śāntāstathānye tīrthasaṃbhavāḥ
The King (Rājan)
Tirtha: Nāgara-kṣetra (contextual)
Type: kshetra
Listener: Viśvāmitra
Scene: A king respectfully questions a sage: behind them are learned brāhmaṇas from Madhyadeśa with manuscripts and calm demeanor, and tīrtha-born ascetics near ghāṭs; the scene conveys inquiry and comparative evaluation.
It raises the dharmic tension between universal Vedic qualification and place-specific ritual custom.
The immediate tīrtha remains unnamed in this verse; it frames a question within the Nāgarakhaṇḍa’s sacred-place narrative.
None directly; it introduces an inquiry about why other qualified brāhmaṇas are not accepted for rites here.
