Sukta 1.123

Devata

Uṣas (Dawn) / Dakṣiṇā (opening image), with dawn-emergence motif

Inside Sukta 123

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A grand image of emergence: the wide chariot (linked with Dakṣiṇā’s auspiciousness) and the gods mounting it as the noble Dawn rises from darkness for human dwelling.

  2. Development

Dawn is praised as the revealer who sets life in motion; the hymn reflects on the lawful alternation of Night and Dawn and the movement from concealment to manifestation.

  3. Climax

The sharp contrast of the two ‘unlike in form’ days—Night making darkness a hidden cave while Dawn blazes forth on her chariot—crystallizes the hymn’s central vision of revelation.

  4. Where it settles

A direct prayer: following Ṛta’s ray, may Dawn place in us an ever more auspicious kratu and establish plenitude and the power to give.

The deity: Uṣas with an opening image of Dakṣiṇā

  • In the VedaUṣas is portrayed as the radiant, noble revealer who rises from ‘blackness,’ arrives on a shining chariot, awakens beings, and discloses paths, forms, and duties. The hymn’s opening also invokes Dakṣiṇā as a divine power linked with auspiciousness and the rightward movement of the rite—suggesting dawn as the favorable turning that makes sacrifice and life fruitful.
  • Cosmic functionTo renew time each day, drive away darkness, set the rhythms of work and worship, and align the world with Ṛta through the regular alternation of night and day.
  • Inner significanceThe dawning of awareness: the emergence of clarity from inertia and confusion, the awakening of discernment, and the establishment of ‘right will’ (kratu) that follows Ṛta’s ray.

The seer

  • Kutsa ĀṅgirasaĀṅgirasa (Angiras lineage) · A prominent early Rigvedic seer associated with hymns to Uṣas and Indra, often expressing the transition from concealment (tamas) to manifestation (jyotis) and the victorious emergence of order.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn primarily praises Uṣas (Dawn). The first verse also brings in Dakṣiṇā as an auspicious opening image connected with the right, favorable movement of the rite.

Dawn is the daily power that drives away darkness, reveals the world, and restores order. The hymn asks that this same ‘dawning’ establish right intention (kratu) and prosperity in the worshipper.

It highlights their lawful alternation: one departs as the other arrives. This contrast teaches that darkness can be a covering, while dawn is the revealing force that brings clarity, activity, and direction.
