Ādi-sarga refers to the earliest phase of cosmic manifestation—the initial unfolding of creation that Purāṇic texts narrate to orient the listener toward the Supreme cause behind the cosmos.
It states that understanding the creation narrative is not merely descriptive; it is intended as a means to recognize the eternal Supreme Self (Paramātmā) as the underlying reality and Lord of the cosmos.
The implied lesson is purposeful listening: sacred narration should be approached as a path to insight into the eternal Lord, not as entertainment—knowledge is meant to transform understanding and devotion.
