Bhakti-Śraddhā-Ācāra-Māhātmya and the Commencement of the Mārkaṇḍeya Narrative
परिश्रियाभितत्पानां दम्भाचाररतात्मनाम् । मृषा तु कुर्वतां कर्म तेषां दूरतरो हरिः ॥ १५ ॥
pariśriyābhitatpānāṃ dambhācāraratātmanām | mṛṣā tu kurvatāṃ karma teṣāṃ dūrataro hariḥ || 15 ||
जे सांसारिक क्लेशाने तापलेले असूनही दंभाचारात रमलेले असतात आणि कपटाने कर्म करतात—त्यांच्यापासून हरि फार दूर असतो।
Narada
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: raudra
It warns that outward religiosity without inner truth—actions done in deceit and pretension—creates spiritual distance from Hari, making genuine grace and realization difficult.
Bhakti is presented as sincerity-centered: devotion is not mere ritual display, but truthful conduct and inner alignment. Hypocritical “religious” behavior blocks closeness to Vishnu.
The verse emphasizes ethical application of karma and sadācāra rather than a specific Vedanga; it implies that correct ritual or scriptural form (e.g., Vyakarana/Shiksha precision) is fruitless if the intention is deceitful.
