Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 72 — Bhīmasena’s counsel on conciliation and Duryodhana’s disposition
na caivaṃ naiṣṭhikaṃ karma kṣatriyasya viśāmpate | āhur āśramiṇaḥ sarve na bhikṣe kṣatriyaḥ śrayet ||
A kṣatriya’s settled duty is to protect and uphold order through rightful means; therefore, begging is presented as incompatible with kṣatriya-dharma and royal dignity, as affirmed by authorities across the āśramas.
Yudhiṣṭhira speaks in a context of deliberation about proper conduct and livelihood, asserting that resorting to begging is not appropriate for a kṣatriya, and citing the consensus of āśrama-following authorities.
