Adhyāya 128 — Proposal to Restrain Keśava; Sātyaki’s Warning and Vidura–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Counsel
अलमर्ध पृथिव्यास्ते सहामात्यस्य जीवितुम् | सुहृदां वचने तिष्ठन् यश: प्राप्स्यसि भारत,“भारत! भूमण्डलका आधा राज्य मन्त्रियोंसहित तुम्हारे जीवननिर्वाहके लिये पर्याप्त है। तुम सुहृदोंकी आज्ञाके अनुसार चलकर सुयश प्राप्त करोगे
alam ardha-pṛthivyās te sahāmātyasya jīvitum | suhṛdāṁ vacane tiṣṭhan yaśaḥ prāpsyasi bhārata ||
वैशंपायन म्हणाले—हे भारत! मंत्र्यांसह तुझ्या उपजीविकेसाठी पृथ्वीचा अर्धा भाग पुरेसा आहे. सुहृदांच्या वचनात स्थिर राहिलास तर तुला चिरस्थायी यश मिळेल.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Contentment and ethical restraint in rulership: accepting a sufficient share (even half the kingdom) and heeding the advice of genuine well-wishers leads to honorable fame, whereas greed and disregard for counsel undermine dharma and reputation.
In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war negotiations, the narrator Vaiśampāyana reports counsel directed to a Kuru prince: that half the realm is adequate for livelihood with one’s ministers, and that following the guidance of friends and well-wishers will bring renown—an appeal toward settlement and avoidance of destructive conflict.
