इत्य् आग्नेये महापुराणे अलङ्कारे शब्दालङ्कारनिरूपणं नाम द्विचत्वारिंशदधिकत्रिशततमो ऽध्यायः अथ त्रिचत्वारिंशदधिकत्रिशततमो ऽध्यायः अर्थालङ्काराः अग्निर् उवाच अलङ्करणमर्थानामर्थालङ्कार इष्यते तं विना शब्दसौन्दर्यमपि नास्ति मनोहरम्

ity āgneye mahāpurāṇe alaṅkāre śabdālaṅkāranirūpaṇaṃ nāma dvicatvāriṃśadadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ atha tricatvāriṃśadadhikatriśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ arthālaṅkārāḥ agnir uvāca alaṅkaraṇamarthānāmarthālaṅkāra iṣyate taṃ vinā śabdasaundaryamapi nāsti manoharam

अशा प्रकारे अग्नि-महापुराणातील ‘अलंकारात शब्दालंकार-निरूपण’ हा ३४२वा अध्याय समाप्त झाला. आता ३४३वा अध्याय ‘अर्थालंकार’ आरंभ होतो. अग्नि म्हणाले—अर्थांचे जे अलंकरण तेच ‘अर्थालंकार’ मानले जाते; त्याविना शब्दसौंदर्यही मनोहर ठरत नाही।
