The Origin of Fire and the Liturgical Names of Agni

दत्तासु दक्षिणास्वादौ तृप्तिर्भूत्वा यतोऽमरान् । नयसे दक्षिणाभागं दक्षिणाग्निस्ततोऽभवत् ॥ १८.१७ ॥

dattāsu dakṣiṇāsv ādau tṛptir bhūtvā yato 'marān | nayase dakṣiṇābhāgaṃ dakṣiṇāgnis tato 'bhavat || 18.17 ||

ആദ്യമായി ദക്ഷിണ നൽകപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ അമരദേവന്മാർ തൃപ്തരായി. നീ ‘ദക്ഷിണാ-ഭാഗം’ നയിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ അതിൽ നിന്ന് ‘ദക്ഷിണാഗ്നി’ ഉദ്ഭവിച്ചു.
