Varaha Purana 136.1 — Adhyaya 136, Shloka 1

A Sūtra-like Manual of Expiations for Ritual Transgressions

atha prāyaścitta-karmasūtram || śrīvarāha uvāca || dīpaṁ spṛṣṭvā tu yo devi mama karmāṇi kārayet | tasyāparādhād vai bhūme pāpaṁ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ||

FAQs

It introduces a structured ‘karmasūtra’-style section, showing how Purāṇic compilations sometimes adopt concise, rule-like formulations akin to procedural manuals.

No specific place-name is given; the address ‘bhūme’ indicates the dialogic addressee as Earth (Pṛthivī).

That improper ritual handling (here framed as touching a lamp in a certain context) is treated as an ‘aparādha’ that generates negative moral-ritual consequence.
