हव्यं देवा न गृह्णंति कव्यं चैव पितामहाः । यत्र देवा न गृह्णंति कथं तत्र पितामहाः । तस्मात्कार्य्या तृतीया च पूर्वविद्धा बुधैर्नरैः

havyaṃ devā na gṛhṇaṃti kavyaṃ caiva pitāmahāḥ | yatra devā na gṛhṇaṃti kathaṃ tatra pitāmahāḥ | tasmātkāryyā tṛtīyā ca pūrvaviddhā budhairnaraiḥ

ദേവന്മാര്‍ ഹവ്യം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയില്ല; പിതൃകള്‍ കവ്യവും സ്വീകരിക്കുകയില്ല. ദേവന്മാര്‍ തന്നെ സ്വീകരിക്കാത്തിടത്ത് പിതൃകള്‍ എങ്ങനെ സ്വീകരിക്കും? അതിനാല്‍ ജ്ഞാനികള്‍ തൃതീയയെ ‘പൂര്‍വവിദ്ധാ’വിധിയില്‍ ചെയ്യണം.
