शुंभोनाम महादैत्यः पुराऽसीत्पृथिवीतले । तेन सर्वं जगद्व्याप्तं जित्वा देवान्रणाजिरे

പുരാതനകാലത്ത് ഭൂമിയിൽ ‘ശുംഭ’ എന്ന മഹാദൈത്യൻ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവൻ യുദ്ധഭൂമിയിൽ ദേവന്മാരെ ജയിച്ച് സമസ്ത ലോകത്തെയും അധീനപ്പെടുത്തി എല്ലാടവും വ്യാപിച്ചു ഭരിച്ചു.
