ചിലർ കല്ലുകൾ കുത്തി കുത്തി തപസ്സു ചെയ്തു; ചിലർ പല്ലുകളെയേ ഉലൂഖലമായി കരുതി. ചിലർ വീണ ഉണങ്ങിയ ഇലകൾ ഭക്ഷിച്ചു; ചിലർ ജലാഹാരികളായി; മറ്റുചിലർ വായുഭക്ഷരായി അത്യന്തം ദാരുണമായ തപസ്സു അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു।
