maheśvara uvāca | atrārthe kathayiṣyāmi purāvṛttamadhokṣaja | śṛṇuṣvaikamanā viṣṇo vāhīkasya dvijanmanaḥ

മഹേശ്വരൻ അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു—ഹേ അധോക്ഷജ (വിഷ്ണു)! ഈ സന്ദർഭത്തിൽ ഞാൻ ഒരു പുരാതന വൃത്താന്തം പറയാം. ഹേ വിഷ്ണോ! ഏകാഗ്രചിത്തത്തോടെ വാഹീകനെന്ന ദ്വിജന്റെ കഥ ശ്രവിക്കൂ.
