Śiva’s Freedom from Bondage and His Cosmic Support
na janmamaraṇe tasya na kāṃkṣitamakāṃkṣitam | na vidhirna niṣedhaśca na muktirna ca bandhanam
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
It points to Shiva as the supreme Pati beyond all dualities—birth/death, like/dislike, rule/prohibition—indicating His transcendence of the entire field of pasha (bondage) that binds the pashu (individual soul).
Linga-worship gives a sacred support (ālambana) for devotees to approach the transcendent Shiva described here; the Saguna form guides the bound soul toward realization of Shiva’s nirguna, beyond bondage and even the concept of liberation.
Meditate on Shiva as the witness beyond opposites while japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) is performed; support it with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrāksha as reminders of dispassion and freedom from attachment/aversion.
