Suta Goswami (narrating the Vāyavīya teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga narrative; it is an āvaraṇa placement: Bhṛṅgīśvara amid Śāstā and the Mātṛkās, and Vīrabhadra between Mātṛkās and Vighneśa—reflecting Śiva’s protective and punitive retinue around the worship-space.
Significance: Invokes protective containment of the ritual field: Mātṛkās stabilize śakti-forces; Vīrabhadra guards against transgression and ritual obstacles; Bhṛṅgī embodies exclusive Śiva-bhakti and disciplined attendance.
Role: destructive
Offering: pushpa
The verse teaches ordered, harmonious worship within a Śaiva sacred layout: Śiva’s śaktis (the Mātṛkās) and attendants (Bhṛṅgī, Vīrabhadra) are honored in their proper places, expressing that Saguna Śiva’s grace flows through His divine retinue and powers, removing inner obstacles to steadiness in bhakti and yoga.
It supports Saguna Śiva-upāsanā by prescribing subsidiary worship around the main Śaiva focus (often the Liṅga): Gaṇeśa as obstacle-remover, the Mātṛkās as Śiva’s śakti-manifestations, and Vīrabhadra/Bhṛṅgī as gaṇas—together forming a complete ritual ecology that safeguards and perfects Liṅga-pūjā.
A practical takeaway is nyāsa-like “placement worship” (āvāhana/arcana by position): while performing Śiva-pūjā, mentally or ritually install and honor Bhṛṅgīśvara amid Śāstā and the Mātṛkās, and Vīrabhadra between the Mātṛkās and Gaṇeśa—then proceed with offerings, ideally alongside japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya).
