yo gurussa śivaḥ prokto yaḥ śivaḥ sa guruḥ smṛtaḥ | gururvā śiva evātha vidyākāreṇa saṃsthitaḥ
Suta Goswami (narrating the Vāyavīya teaching to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It establishes Guru-tattva as Śiva-tattva: the true Guru is not merely a person but Śiva functioning as liberating knowledge (vidyā) that cuts bondage (pāśa) and leads the soul (paśu) toward union with Pati.
It supports seeing the external form of worship—especially the Śiva-liṅga—as guided by the Guru’s instruction; through Saguna devotion and correct upadeśa, the seeker matures into realization of Śiva as the inner light of knowledge.
Approach Śiva through Guru-upadeśa: receive mantra-dīkṣā (commonly the Pañcākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), contemplate its meaning as vidyā, and maintain disciplined worship (pūjā) with purity and devotion.
