Viṣṇu
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Liṅgodbhava
Sthala Purana: Viṣṇu interprets the flame-pillar as a parīkṣā (test) and resolves to seek its lower limit—core motif of the Liṅgodbhava narrative used in many sthala traditions to teach the liṅga’s infinitude.
Significance: Models the aspirant’s inquiry (vicāra) yet also its limitation when directed outward toward ‘ends’; the episode culminates in surrender to Śiva’s ananta nature.
It presents the divine “parīkṣā” (test) where even cosmic powers confront the limitless reality of Shiva as the infinite column of light—teaching humility and pointing to Shiva (Pati) as the transcendent source beyond measurable limits.
The “pillar of flame” foreshadows the Jyotirlinga principle: Saguna worship of the Linga becomes a doorway to the realization of Shiva’s boundless nature, since the Linga signifies the limitless, beginningless Reality.
Contemplate the Jyoti (divine light) of Shiva in Linga-dhyāna while repeating the Panchākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—cultivating humility and surrender rather than egoic “measuring” of the Divine.
