A Brahmin sage (vipravarya) addressing the one performing tapas (contextually Parvati’s penance narrative in the Rudrasaṃhitā, Pārvatīkhaṇḍa)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: liberating
The verse highlights that tapas (disciplined austerity) should be understood through satya—truthfulness and right intention—because spiritual practice gains power when its cause is pure and aligned with dharma, ultimately pointing toward Shiva’s grace as the fruit of sincere striving.
By asking for the true motive behind tapas, the text emphasizes intention (bhāva) in approaching Saguna Shiva—whether through Linga worship, vows, or devotion—since Shiva responds not merely to outer acts but to inner sincerity and purpose.
The practical takeaway is to undertake vows and japa with truthful intent—such as Panchākṣarī mantra japa (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—and to keep one’s austerity steady and transparent, rather than perform it for display.
