Inside Sukta 101

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A mortal truly prospers when he strives for the divine and places Mitra-Varuṇa at the forefront as protectors of the offering and the worshiper.

  2. Development

The hymn expands from personal prosperity to ritual and cosmic order: the sacrifice is portrayed as heaven-reaching, the offering-stream clarified, and divine cooperation sought so the yajña proceeds without obstruction.

  3. Climax

A heightened recognition of sacred power in Vāc as the divine Cow who ‘knows the Word’—the source of inspired utterance and right understanding in the rite.

  4. Where it settles

A protective closing mood: the poet prays that no small-minded person may injure or turn away that divine Speech/insight, ensuring continuity of blessing and effective praise.

The deity: Mitra-Varuṇa

  • In the VedaMitra and Varuṇa are paired Ādityas: Mitra embodies concord, covenant, and right relationship; Varuṇa embodies sovereign oversight, the binding power of law, and the all-encompassing moral-cosmic order (ṛta). They are approached as protectors who uphold truth, guard the sacrifice, and grant safe passage and prosperity to the worshiper.
  • Cosmic functionThey stabilize ṛta by supervising truth, oaths, social harmony, and the regularity of heaven and earth; they protect the yajña so the offering reaches the gods and returns as blessing.
  • Inner significanceMitra-Varuṇa symbolize the inner alignment of one’s intentions and actions with truth: Mitra as harmonious clarity in relations, Varuṇa as conscience/inner law that restrains disorder and restores integrity through right conduct and prayer.

The seer

  • Kāṇva (Kāṇva tradition; specific seer uncertain)Kāṇva gotra / Kāṇva śākhā-associated poet-family · The Kāṇvas are among the most prominent Rigvedic poet-families, especially in Mandala 8, known for vivid ritual poetry, strong Soma-yajña orientation, and frequent praise of Mitra-Varuṇa and other Ādityas in the language of ṛta and protection.

Attributes of the deity

  • Guardians of ṛta (cosmic and moral order)
  • Protectors and patrons of truthful speech and right action
  • Upholders of covenants, law, and social harmony
  • Bestowers of safety, prosperity, and sacrificial success
  • Majestic, watchful, and responsive to sincere offering

Also by this seer

  • Large portions of Rig Veda Mandala 8 are attributed to Kāṇva seers (Kāṇvas).
  • Many Kāṇva hymns are Soma-pressing and offering hymns, often integrating multiple deities within a single sacrificial setting.
  • The Kāṇva corpus is noted for refrains and compact, forceful Triṣṭubh-style praise typical of public ritual performance.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the ritual ground and kindle the fire (Agni) as the carrier of offerings.
  • Establish intention: “set Mitra-Varuṇa in front” as abhiṣṭi (protective support) for the rite and the community.
  • Press and clarify Soma (pavitra imagery), inviting allied deities who move with the offering-current (e.g., Vāyu as the swift recipient of Soma).
  • Recite praise that links prosperity to devatātā (orientation to the divine) and to truthful, orderly conduct.
  • Conclude with reverence for inspired Speech (Vāc)—guarding the ‘Word-Cow’ so insight and blessing are not lost or driven away.

Offerings

  • Soma (pressed and clarified)
  • Ghee/clarified butter (as oblation into fire)
  • Havis (general oblation: grains/cakes as applicable)
