Inside Sukta 56

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Wonder and inquiry: who are these manifest, heroic powers of Rudra that move as one force?

  2. Development

Vivid description of their gear and radiance—gold ornaments, lightning-like brilliance with rains—emphasizing their disciplined motion ‘according to their own law’ and their capacity to protect.

  3. Climax

The Maruts’ full epiphany as a unified, weapon-bearing, rain-flashing host whose fierce energy can be directed for the worshipper’s benefit.

  4. Where it settles

A concluding benediction: may multiple cosmic powers accept the offering; may the worshippers dwell in peace in the Maruts’ lap, guarded always by well-being.

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaA band of storm-gods, youthful and radiant, moving together ‘in one nest’ (sa-nīḷāḥ), adorned with gold, roaring and flashing like lightning, and bearing weapons as they ride with swift steeds and bring the rains.
  • Cosmic functionThey drive the storm and rain-cycle, shake and cleanse the atmosphere, and support Indra’s cosmic victories by energizing the world with wind, thunder, and fertilizing waters.
  • Inner significanceThe disciplined surge of vital force—collective courage, clarity, and momentum that breaks stagnation; when aligned ‘to their own law’ (svadhā), this power becomes protection and well-being rather than mere turbulence.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha-gotra (one of the Saptaṛṣi; traditional seer-family of Mandala 7) · Chief seer of the Seventh Maṇḍala, celebrated for powerful Marut and Indra hymns, priestly authority (brahman), and the Vasiṣṭha–Viśvāmitra rivalry in later tradition.
