Inside Sukta 47

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A luminous feminine power sets the rite in motion—coming from heaven, awakening, and calling the Pitṛs to their seat.

  2. Development

The hymn deepens into symbolic cosmology: ordered supports and nurturers ‘carry’ and ‘feed’ an embryo of becoming, while rays/‘cows of light’ circulate through heaven to define boundaries.

  3. Climax

The riddle resolves into a vision of secured formation—creation protected and completed by measured powers moving swiftly through the heavenly expanse.

  4. Where it settles

A direct benediction: may Mitra–Varuṇa and Agni fulfill peace and well-being; may we gain safe passage and firm foundation—homage to the Vast Heaven, the great seat of truth/order.

The deity: Ambiguous feminine cosmic power together with the Pitṛs

  • In the VedaShe is portrayed as a youthful yet maternal power who “yokes herself,” comes from the luminous heaven, awakens the daughter, and reverently summons the Fathers to their seat (sadana). The hymn’s middle verses speak in riddle-like cosmology—upholders, nurturers of an embryo, and ‘threefold’ supreme cows of light moving through heaven—before ending in a benediction addressed to Mitra–Varuṇa and Agni, with homage to the vast heavenly seat.
  • Cosmic functionTo initiate the daily/ritual awakening (dawn-like arousal of light and order), to connect the living sacrificer with ancestral continuity (Pitṛs), and to articulate ṛta (cosmic order) through symbolic measures of creation and protection.
  • Inner significanceThe ‘Mother/maiden’ can be read as inspired awakening (manīṣā) that rouses higher perception and reconnects one to lineage and memory; the Pitṛs represent inherited wisdom and stabilizing foundations; Mitra–Varuṇa and Agni seal the prayer with ethical order, clarity, and inner fire.

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya (Atri-gotra) · One of the great Ṛgvedic seers; the Ātreyas are prominent in Maṇḍala 5 and are known for hymns that blend luminous nature-imagery with cosmic and ritual symbolism.

  • Maternal-youthful paradox (mahī mātā / yuvatī) signaling creative potency

Also by this seer

  • Major authorship within Rig Veda Maṇḍala 5 (Ātreya family hymns)
  • Hymnic traditions praising Agni, the Ādityas (including Mitra–Varuṇa), and solar/dawn powers in the Ātreya corpus
  • Later Vedic-Itihāsa memory preserves Atri among the Saptarṣi figures (traditional attribution, beyond the Rigvedic layer)

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the fire/altar space; establish a quiet, ‘seated’ ritual area (sadana) for invocation.
  • Recite opening verse(s) visualizing the feminine awakening power coming from the luminous heaven and ‘yoking’ the rite into motion.
  • Invite the Pitṛs to their seat with reverence, acknowledging lineage and requesting protection/continuity.
  • Contemplate/recite the cosmological riddle-verses as a meditation on ordered creation (supporters, nurturers, ‘cows of light’).
  • Conclude with the benediction to Mitra–Varuṇa and Agni, asking for peace, gladness, safe passage, and firm footing; end with homage to the Vast Heaven as the great seat.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into Agni
  • Simple oblations appropriate to household rite (e.g., samidhs/firewood, grains)
  • Water libation and respectful remembrance offerings for the Pitṛs (as locally prescribed)

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn is intentionally poetic: it centers on a feminine awakening power (often interpreted as Uṣas/Dawn or a great Mother principle) and explicitly invokes the Pitṛs (ancestors). It ends by addressing Mitra–Varuṇa and Agni, with homage to the Vast Heaven.

Calling the Pitṛs to the “sadana” means inviting ancestral support and continuity into the ritual space—linking the living sacrificer to lineage, protection, and inherited order (ṛta).

They are symbolic cosmology. The verse compresses creation into measured powers: supporters and nurturers of an ‘embryo’ of becoming, and luminous ‘cows’ (rays/knowledges) moving through heaven to complete and protect the world’s formation.
