Ravana’s Funeral Rites and the Ethics of Post-War Conduct
साहंबन्धुजनैर्हीनाहीनानाथेन च त्वया ।।।।विहीनाकामभोगैश्चशोचिष्येशाश्वतीस्समाः ।
sāhaṃ bandhujanair hīnā hīnānāthena ca tvayā | vihīnā kāmabhogaiś ca śociṣye śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ||
ഞാന് ഇനി ബന്ധുജനങ്ങളില്ലാതെ, നിനക്കെന്ന നാഥ-രക്ഷകനില്ലാതെ; കാമഭോഗങ്ങളിലുമൊഴിഞ്ഞ്, അനന്തമായ വര്ഷങ്ങളോളം ശോകിക്കും.
"Disconnected with relatives, forsaken by you also, deprived of sensual pleasures, I shall grieve permanently."
The verse highlights the social-ethical cost of adharma: the ruler’s downfall creates lasting suffering for dependents, especially the household.
Mandodarī, now facing widowhood and isolation, describes the emptiness that follows the fall of the king.
Loyalty and steadfast attachment: Mandodarī’s identity as spouse and queen is foregrounded even as she confronts loss.
