Jatāyu’s Testimony and Rāma’s Grief
सन्निगृह्य महाबाहुः प्रवृत्तं कोपमात्मनः।अवष्टभ्य धनुश्चित्रं रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्।।।।
sannigṛhya mahābāhuḥ pravṛttaṃ kopam ātmanaḥ |
avaṣṭabhya dhanuś citraṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇam abravīt ||
ഉള്ളിൽ പൊട്ടിയുയർന്ന കോപത്തെ അടക്കി, മഹാബാഹുവായ രാമൻ അത്ഭുതധനുസ്സിനെ ആശ്രയിച്ച് ഉറച്ചു നിന്നു ലക്ഷ്മണനോട് പറഞ്ഞു.
He is Ravana's charioteer slain by my wings in the battle. As I was exhausted in the encounter Ravana clipped my wings, took Sita, and flew into the sky. You need not kill me. I am already slain by the demon.
Dharma here emphasizes self-mastery: even when anger arises, a righteous person restrains it and acts with deliberation rather than impulse.
