Yoga-Sleep, Cosmic Dissolution, and the Lotus of Creation

with Mārkaṇḍeya’s Vision

viprāḥ śūdrasamācārāssaṃti sarve kalau yuge | āśramāṇāṃ viparyāsaḥ kalau saṃprati vartate

Uncertain from single-verse context (likely within a narrator–listener dialogue typical of the Purāṇa).

Concept: In Kali-yuga, social and āśrama duties become inverted; therefore one must consciously protect dharma through deliberate practice rather than relying on inherited norms.

Application: Treat role and status as secondary to conduct: cultivate truthfulness, non-harm, purity, and daily devotion (japa, Tulasi-sevā, Ekādaśī discipline) to counter social drift.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A twilight-age tableau: a once-orderly āśrama settlement now blurred—sacred fires unattended, students without discipline, and elders watching with quiet sorrow. In the distance, a small shrine of Nārāyaṇa remains lamp-lit, suggesting that devotion endures even as social forms decay.","primary_figures":["concerned rishi","young brahmin neglecting study","village folk","Nārāyaṇa (as a small shrine icon)"],"setting":"Forest-edge āśrama near a fading yajña-śālā, with scattered ritual implements and a lone tulasi planter by the shrine","lighting_mood":"temple lamp-lit","color_palette":["smoky indigo","ash gray","lamp-flame amber","faded ochre","deep maroon"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: a central small sanctum with Nārāyaṇa icon glowing in gold leaf, a tulasi planter in front, and on either side contrasting vignettes of neglected āśrama duties; rich reds and greens, ornate borders, gem-studded ornaments on the deity, dramatic moral contrast conveyed through posture and gesture.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: a quiet Himalayan-foothill āśrama at dusk, delicate brushwork showing students wandering and elders seated in contemplation; cool blues and muted earth tones, lyrical trees and a tiny lamp-lit Viṣṇu shrine with tulasi, refined faces expressing gentle lament.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines of an āśrama courtyard with a glowing lamp before Viṣṇu, stylized figures showing disorder in the background; natural pigments with dominant reds/yellows/greens, large expressive eyes on the elder sage conveying karuṇā.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: a devotional corrective—center a lamp-lit Viṣṇu shrine with tulasi and floral borders; surrounding panels depict Kali-yuga disorder as faded motifs, while the center remains saturated in deep blues and gold, with lotus and vine patterns symbolizing dharma’s hidden continuity."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["low temple bell","evening wind through trees","distant conch","soft silence between pādas"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: शूद्रसमाचाराः + सन्ति → शूद्रसमाचारास्संति (विसर्गसन्धि: ः + स → स् + स).

FAQs

It describes Kali-yuga as a time when traditional dharmic roles and life-stages (varṇa and āśrama) become confused, leading to social and spiritual disorder.

Primarily a decline in conduct and observance: it frames the issue as dharmic inversion (viparyāsa), not as an inherent condemnation of any birth-group.

To uphold integrity in one’s duties and life-stage disciplines—truthfulness, self-control, study, service, and responsibility—rather than merely claiming status without corresponding conduct.
